Major League Baseball’s trade deadline is finally here, and action is taking place across the entire league. From the Padres acquiring Josh Hader from the Brewers to the Yankees landing Andrew Benintendi, Frankie Montas, Lou Trivino, and Scott Effross, there are exciting deals aplenty seemingly everywhere this season. Everywhere except Philadelphia, that is. The deadline is not yet over, however, and there is now reportedly a starting pitcher the Philadelphia Phillies are pursuing.

According to the MLB Network’s Jon Heyman, along with the Minnesota Twins, the Philadelphia Phillies are pursuing Cincinnati Reds starting pitcher Tyler Mahle.

The 27-year-old right-hander has struggled this year compared to his previous two seasons, but he remains one of the top starters remaining on the market. This season, Mahle owns a 4.40 ERA and a 1.246 WHIP. The honest truth is that he’s been fine but not overly impressive. What is to like about Mahle is his past success, age, and his controllability (arbitration-eligible next season).

The Philadelphia Phillies are reportedly pursuing Cincinnati Reds’ starting pitcher Tyler Mahle in the hours before tonight’s 6 p.m. trade deadline.

On talent alone, Mahle would become the Phillies’ third or fourth starter as he and Ranger Suarez would battle for their spot in the rotation and, more importantly, as the third starter should the Phillies make the postseason. Assuming the two sides can reach an agreement in the offseason, hopefully avoiding arbitration, Philadelphia would have four of their five starters set for 2023 already.

Tyler Mahle is not the only pitcher on Philadelphia’s mind, as they have also been connected to Los Angeles Angels pitcher Noah Syndergaard (multiple times) and Seattle Mariners starter Marco Gonzales. Talks involving Syndergaard are ongoing, according to Jon Morosi, while discussions for Gonzales have reportedly failed to materialize per The Athletic’s Jayson Stark, who also confirmed Syndergaard is supposedly atop the team’s target list.

With the deadline mere hours away, there will certainly be rumors flying during that time. The Phillies are also still pursuing an upgrade in the outfield, such as Ramón Laureano, Michael A. Taylor, and Jackie Bradley Jr. (Heyman).
