It’s been a busy final few hours of the MLB deadline for the Philadelphia Phillies. After acquiring Brandon Marsh from the Los Angeles Angels and reuniting with David Robertson in a deal with the Cubs, the organization has designated two players for assignment. Odubel Herrera has been DFA’s after the Marsh acquisition, while Jeurys Familia was designated shortly after the Robertson trade.

Both of these designations are long overdue for the organization as both have struggled mightily this season. What was more important for many fans is that both players were presented with domestic violence charges in 2016 (Familia) and 2019 (Herrera). The decision to house both players was met with questions due to both their on and off-the-field failures. After the latest deals by the Phillies, those questions will no longer have to be asked, thankfully.

While the trades for Marsh and Robertson are not the most thrilling in and of themselves, the corresponding designations of Herrera and Familia, without a doubt, improve the grades of the deal, at least in the mind of the Phillies’ fanbase.

After making two trade deadline additions, the Philadelphia Phillies have designated both Odubel Herrera and Jeurys Familia for assignment.

On the season, Herrera slashed for just .238/.279/.378 while collecting five home runs, 21 RBIs, and 23 runs. Even more disappointing than his offensive performance has been his defense, which has handcuffed the Phillies this season as it did in past seasons as well.

Familia, meanwhile has been ever more of a disappointment with a 6.09 ERA, 1.853 WHIP, and given up runs in crucial situations. Most recently, Familia nearly single-handedly cost the Phillies a win against the Pirates on July 28th, giving up five earned runs in 0.1 innings of work.

The Phillies have found a way to add by subtraction in this case and now only need to add a starting pitcher in the next half-hour to solidify their deadline.
