After trading for Edmund Sosa, the Philadelphia Phillies have made a corresponding roster moving to welcome in their new infielder. There were initial questions as to who that player might be, and several names were discussed in speculation among the public. In the end, it was veteran infielder Johan Camargo who received the news that he would be optioned to the Lehigh Valley IronPigs, the AAA affiliate of the Phillies.

The move does not come as a complete shock as someone needed to take a prolonged seat, and there were frankly several average candidates (Camargo among them). This season, Camargo has hit three home runs and 15 RBIs in 52 games. He’s slashed a poor .237/.297/.316 in that time.

Someone had to go when the Phillies brought in Sosa, and the truth is, it might as well have been Camargo. Some debate could be had about the decision to demote Camargo over Yairo Munoz, but their play has been so similar this season that it’s essentially splitting hairs, especially considering what’s around the corner for the team.

The Philadelphia Phillies have optioned veteran Johan Camargo to Lehigh Valley, and there’s likely another infielder soon to follow.

Second baseman Jean Segura is set to return to the team as early as this upcoming Tuesday. His arrival will mean there is yet another man out of the Phillies’ active roster. That’s where Yairo Munoz comes in.

The young utility infielder has played fine for the Phillies this season but still leaves much to be desired offensively. That’s, unfortunately, a recurring theme for the team’s middle infield, save the returning Segura. Munoz has a slash line of .224/.269/.449 to go along with three home runs and seven RBIs.

After Segura’s return, the Phillies infield should look much more like a finished product. From there, it’s the outfield and the pitching staff that needs work.
