Philadelphia Phillies rumors: Noah Syndergaard scouted by team
As the 2022 MLB trade deadline approaches, the Philadelphia Phillies are still in major need of a starting pitcher. The team has so far added a utility infielder, but there has been no news on which starting pitcher the Phillies will add (assuming they choose to do so). A hint may have been provided as, according to The Athletic’s Matt Gelb, the Phillies scouted LA Angels starting pitcher Noah Syndergaard at his recent start against the Kansas City Royals.
The Mighty Thor is not quite the pitcher that he was with the New York Mets, but he’s looked healthy this season. In 15 starts, Syndergaard has posted a 3.89 ERA with a disappointing 5-8 record, but that’s a bit more of a reflection of the Angels than himself, as five of those losses have come without Syndergaard giving up more than two runs.
His home run percentage (2.7%) and hard-hit rate (35.6%) much more closely resemble the earlier portion of his career than his difficult 2021 year, and that’s an encouraging sign for the future. If the Phillies were to push to acquire Syndergaard from the Angels, they would certainly be acquiring a solid talent, but at what cost?
The Philadelphia Phillies have scouted former Met Noah Syndergaard but will The Mighty Thor reunite with Zack Wheeler in the City of Brotherly Love?
According to Gelb, Syndergaard only has around $7 million remaining on the season, and Gelb even alluded to the possibility that the Angels may be willing to accept lesser prospects in return for the seven-year starter. If that is the case, Dave Dombrowski and the Philadelphia Phillies may just have their new arm in the rotation.
Syndergaard is on the last (and only) year of his deal with the Angels, meaning that, should this deal not work in the Phillies’ favor for any reason, they can cut ties at the end of the season. There are certainly other starting pitchers for the team to keep an eye out for, but if the Phillies walk away from the deadline with Syndergaard without giving up a high-end prospect, that could be too tough an offer to pass up on.
