Philadelphia Phillies: JoJo Romero traded for Edmundo Sosa in the first deadline deal
The Philadelphia Phillies have finally made their first deal ahead of the 2022 Major League Baseball trade deadline. The team has announced that they have traded away LHP JoJo Romero to the St. Louis Cardinals for infielder Edmundo Sosa. It’s not an overly exciting first move, but it could be the beginning of much more to come.
Edmundo Sosa is in his fourth season in the Majors, his second with significant playing time. For the St. Louis Cardinals, he was covering the shortstop position left vacant by the then-injured Paul DeJong. It’s been a bit of a regression year for Sosa this season as his average has plummeted to .189 from .271 in 2021, but admittedly, his bat isn’t the reason the Phillies acquired him.
Although he’s famous this season for an error, Sosa is normally a solid defender. More importantly, he is position versatile. He has played short, second, third, and even center field once. Edmundo Sosa is not the future for the Phillies, but as a stopgap, he’s more than acceptable.
The Philadelphia Phillies have broken the seal on their trade deadline dealings by acquiring infielder Edmundo Sosa from the St. Louis Cardinals.
Despite Sosa’s value, it’s a bit odd of a deal for multiple reasons. First, the Phillies and Cardinals are in the midst of a heated race for the third and final Wild Card spot in the National League. Why would St. Louis help Philadelphia? Sure, Paul DeJong was set to return, and Sosa was the odd man out, but why send him to this particular conference rival?
Second, while Sosa is a plus addition, the Philadelphia Phillies infield is already crowded with average talent. From Didi Gregorius to Johan Camargo to Yairo Munoz, there is an overabundance of average (at best) talent in the infield, and that will likely also need to be addressed by the deadline.
No matter the case, Sosa is now, and the Philadelphia Phillies are still two days until the MLB trade deadline is through. A starting pitcher is still a major need and a bullpen arm or an outfielder wouldn’t hurt either.
