Philadelphia Phillies‘ superstar Bryce Harper was set to be reevaluated today to potentially have the pins removed from his broken left thumb. The team, having just been swept by the Chicago Cubs (38-57), was in need of some good news regarding the reigning MVP. Unfortunately, Harper and Philadelphia did not receive the news they were hoping for, as the slugger will have to be reevaluated once again next Monday, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer’s Scott Lauber.

Harper has been out for Philadelphia since he was struck by a pitch from Padres pitcher Blake Snell on June 25th. It’s been one month to the day, but it has felt like an eternity, especially after the team’s pitiful performance against the Cubs coming out of the All-Star Break.

With Harper out at least one extra week, there is even more pressure on General Manager Dave Dombrowski and the Phillies front office than ever to add difference-making talent at the trade deadline. The team cannot just stand idly by hoping that the situation improves as, without Harper, it surely won’t.

After Bryce Harper’s latest injury update, there is more pressure than ever on the Philadelphia Phillies to make a quality addition at the deadline.

Adding an outfielder is without question a need for the Phillies at the deadline, right behind adding a starting pitcher. That hasn’t changed. What has changed is the increased importance of actually making said deal. If Harper were healthy or even if his return were right around the corner, then an excuse could be fabricated, especially if other areas of need were addressed.

Considering that Harper’s return is now shrouded in mystery again, adding another bat is more important than ever. This is especially the case for a team that looked as offensively wounded as the Phillies did against the Chicago Cubs.

Next. Something must change by the trade deadline. dark

Hopefully, next Monday brings some better news for Harper and the Phillies. Until then, at least they have the pending return of Jean Segura to look forward to.
