Philadelphia Phillies: 3 pitchers to target in the 2022 MLB draft
1. Brock Porter RHP
Brock Porter has consistently been mentioned high in MLB draft big boards, and it’s not hard to see why. The 6’4″ 215-pound (now-former) high school senior has a plus-plus fastball, having already broken 100 MPH.
Last season for Orchard Lake St. Mary’s, Porter was remarkable. He boasted an undefeated 9-0 record and a 0.36 ERA, giving up just three earned runs in nearly 60 innings of work. Obviously, the stats are impressive; they always are for first-round prospects. What’s key with Brock is not just what he did but how he did it.
Not only is his fastball one to be admired, but both his change-up and his slider are top-notch, with the former being among the best in the entire class. Add to this list a solid curveball, and you have one complete pitcher with near-perfect size for the Philadelphia Phillies.
Admittedly, he has a bit of a control problem, but what soon-to-be rookie doesn’t? There’s little doubt that he will be able to figure things out with some time in the minors.
Porter checks a lot of the boxes for Philadelphia that both Mick Abel and Andrew Painter did. All three have high-end fastballs and a well-rounded four-pitch selection to choose from. Porter could be yet another no-doubt prospect for the Phillies; he just has to fall to 17.
