Philadelphia Phillies: Alec Bohm avoids serious injury against Cardinals

In the final game of a four-game series against the St. Louis Cardinals, Alec Bohm and the Philadelphia Phillies narrowly avoided a nightmare situation. In the second inning, Bohm came up grimacing after sliding head-first into second base. As he walked towards the dugout, he seemingly told his team, “It’s broken.” The absolute last thing both the Phillies and Bohm needed was an extended injury in this situation. Thankfully, it seems that Bohm has avoided serious injury.

Despite the seeming severity of the injury, The Athletic’s Matt Gelb reported that Bohm’s finger is not broken but dislocated. By no means does this mean that Bohm is “fine”; it’s just the best case of a very bad scenario. Having already lost both reigning MVP Bryce Harper and starting second baseman Jean Segura to fractured fingers, another loss in the same fashion would have been demoralizing at the very least.

Though Alec Bohm has yet to unlock the hitter Phillies fans saw in his first season, he has been the team’s most consistent hitter this season; at least of those still healthy. Losing yet another quality starter for a long period of time has the chance to sink the Phillies’ season, and while Bohm’s injury is less severe than initially expected, the team isn’t out of the woods yet.

Bohm was expected to miss the next two games for Philadelphia anyway, as the Phillies are headed to Toronto for a two-game series against the Blue Jays. Unvaccinated players are not eligible to enter into and subsequently play in Canada, so Bohm, who is unvaccinated, was expected to miss the next two games regardless. His missed time may not end there though.

It’s entirely possible, with only five games left before the All-Star break, that the Phillies could sit Bohm for the team’s series against the Miami Marlins. This would give Bohm, in total, about a week extra in recovery time. There is a concern, though, that he may need even more time to properly recover.

In the interim, the Phillies must be proactive about replacing all of their missing talents. Both Bryce Harper and Jean Segura are about a month away from returning to the field. While the Phillies have done their best to carry on and have played solid baseball, the team has tapered off as of late and will now be without yet another bat.

Philadelphia Phillies General Manager Dave Dombrowski has no choice but to get on the phone looking to make a deal less he risk the entire season being lost before the team’s starters return from the injured list.
