The Philadelphia 76ers are about a week away from beginning summer league action as they continue to build their roster. After adding Cassius Winston and Justin Smith to a roster including current Sixers Jaden Springer, Isaiah Joe, Filip Petrušev, possibly Paul Reed, and more. One player is making his return to the Philadelphia 76ers, though, after a brief stint between the Sixers and Blue Coats last season.

According to JD Shaw of Hoops Rumors, the Sixers are adding Grant Riller to the summer league roster. Riller is now entering his third season in the NBA after being drafted 56th overall by the Charlotte Hornets in 2020 but has yet to properly introduce himself to the league having only seven games and 27 total minutes under his belt, all with the Charlotte Hornets.

Riller was set to join the Philadelphia 76ers on a two-way contract last season before tearing his labrum in the preseason and later tearing his labrum after only four games played with the Blue Coats. Those injuries didn’t keep him down, though, as he focused instead on controlling what he could control and taking it day by day. Entering the summer, Riller is ready to show the league what he can do.

By adding him to the summer league roster, the Philadelphia 76ers are giving Grant Riller a chance to show what he’s really made of.

Earlier this year, I had the opportunity to discuss with Riller, in detail, his journey and where he’s currently at in his recovery. He acknowledged the injury bug that has plagued him so far in his NBA career but is not worried about that now or going forward.

At his best, Riller has a bevy of offensive skills that could benefit the Sixers. As a playmaker, first and foremost, Riller shows his value. His vision and tight ball-handling would provide Philadelphia with another solid playmaking option off the bench next to De’Anthony Melton.

Additionally, he displayed an ability to be a high-level scorer in college, showing potential to become a three-level scorer at the NBA level.

One thing is certain: The Philadelphia 76ers have welcomed a player hungry for an opportunity in Grant Riller. He will undoubtedly be an exciting watch and one of the top underdogs on this summer league roster.
