3. Washington Commanders

If you remove the names of every quarterback on this list and simply look at the numbers, Washington’s collection of players is actually pretty good. They have a former Pro Bowler, an experienced reserve with double-digit starts on his resume, and an intriguing college quarterback who may end up starting for the team at some point down the line.

Unfortunately, players aren’t just a walking collection of stats, and the major quarterback decision they decided to execute over the offseason – more on that in a moment – is both incredibly polarizing and potentially season-defining depending on how things shake out.

Most important performer: Carson Wentz

Realistically, Carson Wentz will never have another season like 2017. Too many things broke perfectly in Philly’s favor, the entire offense ticked along like a finely tuned machine, and Wentz played with a certain je ne sais quoi that he has never exhibited before or since.

And yet, if Wentz can look like he did in 2018, or even 2019, it’s inarguable that the Commanders’ offense would be better in 2022 than in 2021, when Ron Rivera largely relied on Antonio Gibson to be the focal point of his offense.

If Wentz takes his lumps from 2021 in stride and takes a step forward, the Commanders may be a playoff team in their first season with their new name. If not? Well, maybe Wentz will be on his fourth team in as many seasons, now acquired for two Day 3 picks.
