Philadelphia Phillies: Mickey Moniak optioned, Jean Segura to 60-day IL
Amid a red-hot 10-2 streak, the Philadelphia Phillies made an assortment of roster moves before their loss to the Miami Marlins on Tuesday night. These moves involved optioning former first-overall pick Mickey Moniak and sending second baseman Jean Segura to 60-day IL. While the past 12 games can be considered nothing short of a success for Philadelphia, there’s always some fine-tuning to do here and there.
In the case of Moniak, the young center fielder has unfortunately performed under-par once again as he has only had two runs and one RBI in nine games. If that weren’t disappointing enough, he’s slashing a horrific .160/.250/.160, and despite the small sample size, it’s fairly obvious that he’s clearly not ready for the show.
Jean Segura, meanwhile, continues to sit on the IL with a broken finger that will keep him sidelined at least until the back end of August. One would have expected the offense to take a nosedive considering how well Segura played to start the season, and yet, the team has not only stayed afloat, they’ve thrived. When Segura does eventually return, the Phillies’ offense could reach yet another height, but we’re a long way away from that day.
The Philadelphia Phillies have optioned center fielder Mickey Moniak to AAA and transferred second baseman Jean Segura to the 60-day IL in a flurry of moves.
Neither move is particularly surprising but what is interesting to note is that the team also selected the contract of Yairo Muñoz, who started at second base last night against the Miami Marlins. Muñoz went 0-2 with a walk in his first game with the Phillies.
Jean Segura’s transfer really affects little else but the ability to add another player to the 40-man roster. The Phillies sending Moniak down to AAA, however, signifies that there is a limit to the amount of allowable poor play. The team could certainly show that they mean this, though, by replacing Corey Knebel as the closer.
