3. Philadelphia Phillies rumors: Another chance to sign Carlos Correa.

Carlos Correa settled on a short-term deal with the Minnesota Twins this offseason with lots of opt-outs. It includes one after the 2022 season and many expect he’ll use it. The longtime Houston Astros shortstop should, yet again, be available for the Phillies to pursue. There weren’t any Phillies rumors about them chasing him while available last winter. Could it chance in round number two?

It’s hard to believe the Phillies would indeed go anywhere near the high demands he had over the offseason. Correa isn’t quite good enough for a $200 million deal or the $300 some believed he was targeting. A really good defender and a guy who can hit for power and a decent average, he’s a good mix of a lot of things with no one talent standing out most.

Maybe this is why Correa doesn’t feel like the guy to chase most. The distance between him and Swanson just doesn’t seem large enough to justify the payday. The Phillies also have enough power on their roster than to go after the shortstop free agent with the best pop.

Correa’s injury history is also a concern. Coming into the 2022 season, he has only two seasons of more than 110 games played. The Phillies don’t have much room for error. Signing Correa to a megadeal only for him to miss 50+ games a year is not a winning formula.
