Philadelphia 76ers: A WNBA partnership just makes sense
According to Chantel Jennings and Mike Vorkunov of The Athletic, the WNBA has identified six potential markets for one-to-two new expansion teams: Oakland, Nashville, Portland, San Francisco, Toronto, and… Philadelphia.
Yup, you read that correctly; after years of growing clamor for a second professional basketball team in our fair city, the chances of a WNBA team joining the fabric of Philadelphia’s sports culture is becoming tangible – so close we might actually have to start thinking about names.

The Philadelphia 76ers could help to facilitate a new WNBA team
With the league expected to introduce new clubs in time for the 2024 season, The Athletic’s league sources believe that the Philadelphia 76ers would need to throw their hat into the ring and link themselves to this new WNBA counterpart a la the connections between the Indiana Fever, Los Angeles Sparks, Minnesota Lynx, New York Liberty, and Phoenix Mercury.
Well goodness, if that’s all it takes to get a bring another basketball franchise to South Philly, then what are we waiting for? Philadelphia is a very good basketball city, the Wells Fargo Center is really only used for concerts during the summer. Do it, Josh Harris, you’re bidding on the Denver Broncos; we all know you have the money.
Will it happen? Will fans finally have an opportunity to dodge the relentless heat of a South Philly summer with a trip to the Wells Fargo Center for a meaningful game of professional basketball? Or will fans once again have to wait and hope that the WNBA announces another expansion a few years down the line and maybe beef the association up to16 teams by the year 2030?
The Philadelphia 76ers: The WNBA is calling, pick up the darn phone.
