One year ago today, Zach Ertz was still a member of the Philadelphia Eagles.

Mind you, he was coming off of an underwhelming season, arguably the worst of his career, and was the subject of very heavy trade speculation for the better part of the previous year, but in May of 2021, and all the way to October, Ertz still called the City of Brotherly Love home, and not just for a few months during the offseason.

Today, Ertz is an Arizona Cardinal through and through, as he just signed a three-year, $31.65 million deal that will keep him under contract through the 2024 season, when he will be 34 years old. By all accounts, Ertz appears happy with his new home, his new team, his new teammates… except for maybe one of them. That’s right, in the weirdest story you’ll read all day, Ertz and fellow former Pro Bowler JJ Watt are having a minor feud over donuts and the etiquette surrounding buying teammates their favorite flavors.

Is this a news news story? Eh, not really, but if you’re a Philadelphia Eagles fan interested in the comings and goings of a former franchise favorite, you might want to read on, as it’s a pretty wild story indeed.

Where do you fall on the donut debate, Philadelphia Eagles fans?

Alright, so without further ado, let’s go full-on Kevin Roberts, and talk about some donuts.

On May 26th, Zach Ertz was feeling generous. He wanted to buy some donuts for himself, strength coach Buddy, and his teammates and asked around to see if anyone had flavor preferences. JJ Watt, everyone’s favorite Subway salesman/former All-Pro offered up his two favorite options: Maple glaze and pink frosted donut – he thinks it’s strawberry flavored.

All in all, nothing too usual there; Maple glaze is a pretty common option, and pink frosted donuts, especially with rainbow sprinkles, is among the most popular donut flavors in all of donut-dom, if for no other reason than its association with The Simpsons.

Fortunately for the Cardinals players who showed up on May 27th, Ertz followed through on his word and brought back the bacon… I mean donuts, and by all accounts, brought enough for the whole team to share.

The problem? No Maple glaze or strawberry frosted.

Needless to say, Watt had mixed feelings; by his own account, he appreciated the free donut, as, despite having earned well over $115 million as a pro, a free donut is a free donut, and a free donut hits different. But then again, why didn’t Ertz get his favorite flavor? Does he have any leg to stand on to be upset?

Let’s see what Ertz has to say on the topic.

“No;” simple, clean, *mic drop* perfect.

Next. That time Jordan Davis played running back. dark

Philadelphia is sort of spoiled when it comes to donuts. There’s Wawa, Federal Donuts, and a slew of other fun options to get your sweet fix for a few dollars. Had Zach Ertz stuck around with the team that drafted him, he wouldn’t have to worry about securing any number of donut flavors, and wouldn’t have JJ Watt as his teammates to complain about it. *shrug* I guess that’s just another perk of being a member of the Philadelphia Eagles – good luck in the desert, Zach; it looks like you’ll need it.
