3. Philadelphia Phillies Achilles heel: The management

Joe Girardi has not been a good manager. Dave Dombrowski has not been a good President of Baseball Operations. Owner John Middleton has been open to spending money but not successful at picking the right guys to make the important decisions on personnel.

It all starts at the top. Management in Philadelphia has been an Achilles heel for this franchise.

Unafraid to spend money, the Phillies have been spending it in awful ways. They are compiling their problems with too many of the same types of players. They already had two DH candidates on the roster before the year began with Bryce Harper and Rhys Hoskins. Signing one of Nick Castellanos or Kyle Schwarber would have been okay. Bringing them both in made them way too reliant on home runs.

The Phillies are on the heels of having to continue to spend to get out of this mess or blow it all up. And because of how weak their proverbial Achilles tendons have been so far this season, it feels like everything can snap at any moment.

Most frustrating of all, these have been ongoing problems for several years. They are defining insanity. Despite changes to the roster and management, this team persists with a flawed ball club limping through another year in a walking boot—only they have three of them instead of just two.
