3 Ex-Philadelphia Eagles negatively affected by the 2022 NFL Draft
Alright, this one might be a bit of a stretch but hear me out.
When Zach Ertz was traded to Arizona, he looked cooked. His game had taken a notable dip from his former glory in midnight green, and when he was ultimately traded for a fifth-round pick and Tay Gowan, some openly questioned which team won the deal.
By season’s end, which came after Week 18 for the non-playoff Arizona Cardinals, Ertz had effectively proven that he was still a TE1 at the NFL level and was paid to the tune of $31.65 million over three years as a result. Playing in a spread offense built around Air Raid concepts, Ertz closed out the season with 56 catches for 574 yards and three touchdowns and rapidly proved to be a favorite of
Oakland As infielder
Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray.
… and then Arizona selected Trey McBride, arguably the best tight end in the 2022 NFL Draft, and suddenly, Ertz became a platoon member instead of the unquestioned star of the show.
Now granted, McBride isn’t going to magically make Ertz irrelevant; the duo will likely play big roles in Kliff Kingsbury’s offense and will probably even play together for a good bit of any given game. But still, in an offense that isn’t exactly known for being tight end friendly, having two mouths to feed could place that one big tight end play in any given game on McBride’s stat sheet instead of Ertz’s, which could affect his standing and future contractual standings.
Are there any other players who deserve to be on this list? Does the drafting of Sam Howell signal the end of the Carson Wentz era in Washington before it even begins? Let us know!
