5) Best Philadelphia Phillies trade: Brad Lidge from the Astros.

The 2008 Phillies don’t happen if not for Brad Lidge. Perfect in the regular season and playoffs in save opportunities, he is one of those athletes you would swear spent a decade with the team because of how important he was.

Lidge would actually spend only four seasons with the Phillies. His 2008 season, featuring a 2-0 record, 1.95 ERA, and 41 saves in 41 opportunities helped the team secure only their second World Series victory. He was uncharacteristically horrendous the next season, going 0-8 with a 7.21 ERA. Fortunately, Lidge was able to rebound with a fine 2010 season before injuries took their toll and he was limited to only 19.1 frames in 2011.

Lidge’s stint with the Phillies back in November of 2007 when he was traded to the club from their favorite partner to make deals: the Astros. Along with Eric Bruntlett, a memorable role-player who gave the Phillies an abundance of pinch-running and defensive replacement appearances, the cost was nothing too crazy.

Michael Bourn was the best player the Phillies gave up but considering the players they had in their outfield over the next few years it was an easy piece to part with. Mike Costanzo and Geoff Geary were also traded away for Lidge and Bruntlett.

It’s easy to call this a huge win and one of the best Phillies trades the franchise ever made.
