Philadelphia Phillies overreaction: They may hit home runs but they won’t score much else.

The Phillies offense wasn’t as boisterous as it should have been in the first weekend. They scored 9 in the first game, 4 in the second, and only a single run in the third. It was a Jean Segura home run that accounted for their only run of the game. It was just one of three hits they had against the Athletics.

Woe is us! What good is hitting all of these home runs if you aren’t going to make a few of them salamis? Is this going to be Bryce Harper all over again with all of his solo shots?

If there is any consolation, the Phillies pitching was superb. You can trade in a few of those three-run home runs for solo dingers if the pitching staff is able to keep this up. And if we want to overreact to what we saw from the starters and relievers this weekend, they should be halfway decent.

The Phillies are still waiting for the debut of reigning Cy Young runner-up Zack Wheeler to really showcase what their pitching can look like. Ranger Suarez has also yet to debut and he’s one of those sleeper Cy Young candidates people willing to have their heartbroken have chosen.

In order to make the most of their powerful lineup, this team will need to get more runners on base. Solo home runs are okay. Rounding the bases with a friend is so much nicer.
