Philadelphia Phillies sign Kyle Schwarber to a four-year, $79 million deal: B+

The Phillies were pushing hard to improve their starting lineup. Having already added three arms to the bullpen, they went out and signed the first of two big sticks.

Kyle Schwarber got a four-year contract worth $79 million to suit up for the Phillies. It was about exactly what they should have paid him.

Schwarber doesn’t have the kind of success some of the other free agents out there do. He’s a guy you sign this offseason hoping the best has yet to come. And if last year was any indication, Schwarber may have finally found his best swing.

In only 471 plate appearances, Schwarber smashed 32 home runs for the Washington Nationals and Boston Red Sox last year. It was a power surge from him we hadn’t seen before. In 2019, he did blast 38 but that came in 610 chances. He was on a whole new level last year. Entering his age 29 season, the Phillies were willing to believe this is the pace they can expect going forward.

Signing a player that could be their DH was a must for the Phillies. They added him in Schwarber. Also capable of playing some left field, another position of need, they get a nice solid B+ for this deal.
