Philadelphia Phillies sign Jeurys Familia to a one-year, $6 million deal: C-

It became clear what the Phillies were doing when they signed Jeurys Familia to a one-year deal worth $6 million. They’re giving themselves options. They are building a bullpen of guys who have previous closer experience willing to take lesser contracts for the 2022 season.

Rather than sign Kenley Jansen for the $16 million he’ll get from the Atlanta Braves this year, the Phillies chose to use that same amount on two arms. Desperate for warm bodies, it’s probably the wiser of the two options. Why take a shot at one guy with some questions when you can get two chances at it?

Familia isn’t coming off of nearly as good of a year as Knebel. His last three seasons with the New York Mets working as a middle reliever or setup man haven’t gone nearly as well as his first couple of years in the big leagues. Once a great closer for the Mets, he has fallen on some harder times.

Nonetheless, the Phillies needed big league relief pitchers. Familia, while not a star, fits the description. He can get big league hitters out. On a rather affordable one-year contract, it’s an easy gamble for the club to make when considering the potential upside of acquiring him.

This addition gets a C- from me. It’s about average, maybe less so. It does improve the Phillies bullpen in the long run which is the most important thing of all.
