Philadelphia Flyers: 5 best captains in franchise history
By Tim Boyle
3. Best Philadelphia Flyers Captain – Claude Giroux
Fans will probably debate the legend of Claude Giroux for centuries; or at least another season or two. The team wasn’t able to find much success during his time as the team’s captain which lasted from January 15, 2013, until March 19, 2022, when he was traded to the Florida Panthers. It was the longest period of any Flyers player ever having the role on the team without a break in between. Naturally, there must have been a reason for it.
Giroux left the Flyers with a lot of wonderful accomplishments. His 900 points ranks second all-time on the franchise leaderboard. The same is true for his 1,000 games played and 609 assists.
The Flyers may have won only a single playoff series during the time he was the captain. It’s hard to say this falls squarely on him when you look at all of the statistics he was able to put up.
An entire era of Flyers hockey will be remembered as the time Giroux was the captain. For the good times and more often disappointing ones, the nearly ten-year-stretch of hockey in Philly had one of the best captains in franchise history in it. No season ended the way we wanted it to. And while winning a Stanley Cup is the ultimate goal, not everyone can get a chance to skate around on the ice with it.
