Just when you thought the whole “The Philadelphia Eagles need to trade for a veteran quarterback” discourse died when Russell Wilson threw on a Denver Broncos hoodie, a small but vocal segment of the fanbase has settled on a new, weird fascination: Social media bios.

That’s right, with Deshaun Watson cleared from criminal charges in relation to his two-dozen claims of sexual assault, folks have almost immediately put the situation behind them and started mocking the current Houston Texans quarterback to their favorite QB-needy teams.

After how events transpired in Houston last season, it’s clear Watson isn’t long for the state of Texas, but where would he land? In Pittsburgh to replace Ben Roethlisberger? In Indianapolis to replace Carson Wentz? In Seattle to replace Wilson? Well, when some savvy social media user noticed that Jalen Hurts didn’t have the words “Philadelphia Eagles quarterback” in his bio, speculation of Howie Roseman’s reported interest in Watson hit a fever pitch.

Is Jalen Hurts headed back to his hometown? Potentially so, if for nothing else than a visit but not because of the words in his Twitter bio, because it never said Philadelphia Eagles – as his agent pointed out here – and still features the team prominently.

Jalen Hurts still seems happy to be the Philadelphia Eagles’ quarterback.

There’s a time-honored trend of players voicing their displeasure with a team via social media. When a player like Kyler Murray is unhappy with the Arizona Cardinals, he’ll unfollow the team, remove every picture featuring their logo/uniform, and maybe even post some petty quasi quotes about knowing one’s value for good measure.

Does this strategy always work? No, Murray is still a member of the Cards, and he brought back the Arizona pictures once his situation semi-resolved itself, but for a time, his status with the team was a semi-major news story and helped to rally support in his favor.

This is not the strategy Jalen Hurts opted to pull with the Philadelphia Eagles, as he still follows the team on all platforms and just tweeted about Jason Kelce’s return yesterday.

There’s also a trend of players removing pictures from a previous team when they are traded, as James Harden did when he switched teams from Houston to Brooklyn in January of 2021. Whether due to animosity or a desire to close an old chapter of a career, this sort of social media purge can be as cathartic as it is maddening for fans who connected to that era of a player’s career.

Hurts didn’t do that either. As of the time of publication, Hurts is still very much a member of the Eagles and hasn’t removed any pictures of his time with the Eagles or of his time watching the Sixers courtside, for that matter, either.

No, until a deal is officially done, for Watson or any player really, best not to focus too much on social media.

Next. No Amari Cooper, no problem. dark

Will Jalen Hurts be the Philadelphia Eagles’ starting quarterback come Week 1? Yes, I would assume it will be. Could that change tomorrow? Yes as well; until a deal happens, either way, this will be a story until it isn’t.
