How do the Philadelphia Eagles compare to the Bengals and Rams at tight end?

Hot take alert: If Dallas Goedert started all 17 games for the Philadelphia Eagles at tight end without Zach Ertz to split snaps with early in the season, he likely would have been a Pro Bowler in this, the first year of his new four-year, $57 million contract.

While both C.J. Uzomah and Tyler Higbee had one more touchdown than Goedert in 2021, the pride of South Dakota finished out the season with 830 yards on 56 catches, which was both more total yards and more yards-per-catch than any of his fellow members of Tight End U.

But wait, it gets better. As crazy as it may sound, the Eagles actually had the fourth-leading yards getter at the tight end position of the three teams, with Ertz recording 189 of his 763 total 2021 yards in a midnight green uniform. Is that a testament to Ertz’s abilities, a knock on both the Rams and the Bengals for their lack of depth, or a sign that the Eagles should invest in a solid tight end to really take their passing game over the top?

Ranking: First.

The solution? Find Goedert a quality running mate.

There’s no doubt about it; the Eagles have a top-5 tight in the 27-year-old Goedert, but he can’t do it alone. In 2021, he received 67 percent of the team’s catches by tight ends but struggled to pick up consistent yards from the position once Ertz left town. With Tyree Jackson all but lost for the 2022 season due to a January torn ACL, the Eagles would be wise to invest further in the position, be that another homegrown draftee, a trade for an established prospect like Devin Asiasi, who doesn’t get much run with his current team, or even a player like Ertz, back in Philly to fill out the roster and provide joy to his legions of loving fans once more.
