7) Philadelphia Phillies MVP Bryce Harper in 2021

The most recent of the MVPs won by a Phillies player came in 2021 when Bryce Harper swept it up. Like Konstanty, his numbers may not have been historic. However, at least in the eyes of the voters, it was a pretty easy choice. Harper received 17 of the 30 first-place votes and won rather handily.

Harper did lead the league in a couple of important statistics. These numbers include 42 doubles, a .615 slugging percentage, a 1.044 OPS, and 179 OPS+. Harper was among the league leaders in a couple of other categories. And while we would have liked to see him finish with more than 84 RBI, he did cross the plate 101 times.

Unlike many other MVPs we see in baseball, this was not a season of accumulating huge statistics. Instead, he relied on percentages like the previously mentioned OPS to help him stand out from the crowd.

Interestingly enough, this is now Harper’s second MVP award without 100 RBI in his back pocket. In fact, he has only ever reached triple-digits twice in his career now; doing so in his final season with the Washington Nationals and first with the Phillies in 2019.

Harper is built differently than most of the game’s best players. Walks are huge for him. Whether or not they’re as good as a hit is debatable. For sure, he’s the reigning NL MVP.
