Philadelphia Phillies starting lineup of the all-time greats
By Tim Boyle
Our number eight hitter is C Darren Daulton.
There are a couple of players we could turn to for the catcher position. Bob Boone. Carlos Ruiz. They could deserve the spot. What about 1996 Benito Santiago?
So far, our lineup is sans 1993 Phillies. Maybe it was that missing puzzle piece which had me pick Darren Daulton as the man to put behind the plate.
Daulton may not have the best numbers of any Phillies catcher. This is my fantasy lineup, though. And as upset as my mother would be for leaving Mike Lieberthal off the list (he can be the backup), I need to add a little bit of Philadelphia Dutch to the order.
Daulton’s Phillies career included a .245/.357/.427 slash line, 134 home runs, and 567 RBI. Outside of the 1992-1995 stretch, most of what he did was unspectacular. Daulton spent his first few years as a backup or part-timer until the 1989 season when he played in 131 games while hitting only .201.
I’d be hoping in a lineup like this we could get something closer to the 27 home runs, 109 RBI we got to see him piece together in 1992, or even the slightly less 24 home runs, 105 RBI he had for the 1993 team.
Daulton is a big part of Phillies history. It’s an honor to have him getting the last hacks before the pitcher steps to the plate.
