Philadelphia Eagles: Watch Darius Slay score a homecoming touchdown
Although Darius Slay has technically been a member of the Philadelphia Eagles for the better part of two season, his heart belongs to Detroit.
A second round draft pick out of Mississippi State all the way back in 2013, Slay played the first seven years of his NFL career as a member of the Lions, and established himself as one of the league’s premier cover cornerbacks while wearing Honolulu blue.
We’re talking three-Pro Bowls, a spot on the 2017 All-Pro team, and a single season stint atop the NFL’s interceptions list.
So naturally, when the Philadelphia Eagles made their way back to Detroit, Darius Slay was going to show up and show out a little more for that game, right? Naturally but even “Big Play” Slay couldn’t have predicted that he’d score a defensive touchdown in the stadium that made him a star.
You’ve gotta watch Darius Slay scoop and score a TD for the Philadelphia Eagles.
When you’re up 31-0 with 1:20 left to play in the third quarter, it would be understandable for players to start taking packing it in.
The NFL season is long, an injury can happen on literally any play, after putting in a ton of work over the almost three quarters of the game, it would be understandable to turn your attention to Week 9 and maybe avoid contact when possible.
That’s a big reason why the Philadelphia Eagles opted to pull their starters in the fourth quarter, and why the New York Bulldogs still hold a spot in the NFL record books.
Well, apparently no one told that to Michigan native Avonte Maddox and Darius Slay, as the former forced a fumble on D’Andre Swift that the latter scooped up for a super duper game clinching touchdown.
What you didn’t catch it, or would just like to watch it again? Scroll down my friend; I’ve got you.
See what I mean? That was too sweet.
Facing off coverage in a Cover 2 look, Jared Goff attempted to check the ball down to Swift in order to pick up a few yards on first down, but the second-year second-round pick out of Georgia was blown the heck up by Maddox and T.J. Edwards – who played well in place of Eric Wilson – and ultimately put the ball on the ground for Slay to scoop up and score.
Was that, like, the best football play of Slay’s career? No, Maddox and Edwards really did do the vast majority of the work but Slay still had the football IQ to make a play on the ball and score only the second touchdown of his career.
Factor in the win, and I’d say Slay’s homecoming was a successful one.
As crazy as it may sound based on his salary, Darius Slay is a very underrated cornerback. He can pretty much do anything you ask on the field and, at 30-years-old, still has plenty of gas left in the tank. If he turns in a few more highlight-reel plays like his fumble return for a touchdown, maybe that perception will start to change outside of the Philadelphia Eagles – and Detroit Lions – fanbase.
