Philadelphia Phillies: 3 reasons trading for Byron Buxton makes sense
By David Esser
He could come at a discount
Speaking of who/what the Philadelphia Phillies could be forced to give up in a potential Buxton trade, there’s a half-decent chance that he could be acquired at a slight discount. There’s been plenty of smoke in regards to him not wanting to re-up with the Twins, and his recent injury history should be lowering trade value as well.
Buxton has only played 27 games this season, as he’s currently holed up on the injured list with a broken hand.
While Buxton is a dynamic center fielder who would start on a majority of MLB teams at the moment, his current circumstances screams of a situation that Dombrowski should be able to take advantage of. Between the lack of a current longterm deal and the questions surrounding his longterm health, there’s a possibility Philly could land him without giving up one of their top two prospects (Bryson Stott, Mick Abel).
Of course, this point is a double-edged sword. There’s no telling if Buxton will be able to stay healthy should he land in Philadelphia at some point this season, and there’s no guarantee he’d look to re-sign with the Phillies as well.
Dombrowski has a pretty good track record when it comes to swinging big trades – you kinda just have to trust his judgment on something like this.
