Philadelphia Phillies midseason report card: Grading the offense
By David Esser
Jean Segura: A
Someone who probably should have been participating in the All-Star festivities this past week in Colorado, Jean Segura has seemingly turned back the clock this season for the Phillies, and is playing far more similar to the .300+ hitter that the Phillies thought they were acquiring upon trading for him.
Segura hit .322 with an .827 OPS through the first half. That’ll play!
Didi Gregorius: D
Didi started to show some of that lefty pop upon returning from the injured list, but thus far, that two-year/$28 million contract is looking like a bad one. His defense has seriously regressed, and he’s struggling to get on base enough to compensate for it.
Alec Bohm: D
Similar to Didi, Bohm was starting to heat up just a tad leading into the All-Star break, but his first proper year in the big leagues has not gone according to plan. He’s hitting just .243 with a .641 OPS, and of course is providing some league-worst defense over at the hot corner. He’s going to have to be better moving forward.
Andrew McCutchen: B
McCutchen got off to a slow start this season in the leadoff spot, but has since established himself as a reliable middle-of-the-order power bat. His 15 home runs and 48 RBIs were much appreciated, and could see him earn a decent contract elsewhere during the upcoming offseason.
