Anyone on the Spurs

Another team that has been heavily linked to Ben Simmons this offseason, the San Antonio Spurs seem hell-bent on acquiring some sort of “star” moving forward. They have a few nice pieces on their roster that could be packaged together to land someone, but none of them should really be of interest to the Philadelphia 76ers considering their current “Finals or bust” mindset.

Rudy Gay, Dejounte Murray, and Derrick White are the Spurs top three players at the moment, and it’s hard to imagine any combination of them really lifting the Sixers into serious championship contention. Gay is a solid offensive player, but is already on the wrong side of 30 and has zero Finals experience.

Murray and White are both attractive young pieces, but neither are elite go-to scorers.

Considering the Sixers biggest need at the moment is a truly dominant perimeter ball-handler, it simply makes little sense to engage in trade talks with the Spurs this summer, unless Daryl Morey has plans of acquiring assets from San Antonio and flipping them for someone else – someone more established.

Ultimately speaking, Daryl Morey and the Sixers are going to benefit the most from playing the long game when it comes to the looming Ben Simmons trade. Someone truly elite will become available eventually this summer, and that’s when the Sixers pounce.
