Derek Barnett, DE

The second Philadelphia Eagles player to be mentioned was that of Derek Barnett, who is playing on the final year of his rookie contract (he’s currently on his fifth-year option, which was picked up by the Eagles last season).

Here’s what NFLTR had to say about Barnett potentially being on the move this year:

"The former first-round pick is playing on the fifth-year option in 2021 at $10 million, which is steep for a player who has a career-high 6.5 sacks. That contract is also a major obstacle to a trade but if Barnett isn’t in the Eagles future plans, it behooves them to shop him, perhaps if he’s playing well before the trade deadline."

Barnett isn’t nearly as bad as some Eagles fans make him out to be, but he’s undoubtedly not lived up to the pedigree of being a first-round edge rusher. The sack numbers are low, and he’s struggled to stay on the field. In terms of handing out a second contract, I would avoid it with Barnett if I was Howie Roseman.

Salvaging some value out of Barnett at this year’s trade deadline makes plenty of sense, especially when you consider the amount of first round picks that the Eagles have lined up next offseason. Finding a new, young defensive end to replace Barnett shouldn’t be too hard.
