Philadelphia Eagles: 3 things to know about QB Nick Mullens
By David Esser
Future QB2?
The last point worth highlighting (one that I alluded to back on page one) is in regards to Mullens potentially taking over Joe Flacco‘s QB2 role by as soon as this season. As long as Mullens shows up to training camp healthy and a similar type of throwing shape that he was in with the 49ers, he might already be the second best quarterback on the roster:
Despite being nine years younger than Flacco (Mullens is 26, not 25), he’s already put up numbers that are at least comparable to what Flacco has done recently. Granted Flacco was playing for the miserable New York Jets and Mullens the offense-savvy 49ers, but the numbers are the numbers.
Especially for a football team that is looking to get younger moving forward, committing further backup QB responsibilities to Mullens as the season progresses makes a ton of sense on paper. Flacco likely won’t be around next season, whereas Mullens could be extended for cheap as a longterm QB2/QB3 option, similar to how the Philadelphia Eagles kept Nate Sudfeld around.
Nick Mullens is by no means some sort of earth-shattering, groundbreaking acquisition, but it does provide some much-needed clarity to how the Eagles QB depth chart is going to be shaping up this season.
