“The Big Slot”

A rather unorthodox tactic that the New Orleans Saints have made popular by way of Michael Thomas, the Philadelphia Eagles could experiment with a “big slot” moving forward. They have a handful of bigger-bodied receivers on the roster, and there appears to be no guarantee that Sirianni wants to incorporate a stereotypical “X” receiver into his offense this season. He’s repeatedly highlighted all offseason long that anyone can play the X receiver role, regardless of size or speed.

With DeVonta Smith appearing to line-up at the position during OTAs, I guess we should take Nick by his word.

Travis Fulgham would make the most amount of sense to line-up in the slot if the Eagles end up going with a taller option there, with JJ Arcega-Whiteside sneaking behind as he looks to save his NFL career under a new coaching staff. Undrafted free agents Jhamon Ausbon and Trevon Grimes are two additional names who could operate in the “big slot” role as well.

Again, this is an unorthodox tactic, but one that the Eagles might find some value in experimenting with as they look to build an identity this season. With Smith and Reagor potentially the two outside wideouts, getting a big-bodied, more physical option between them in the slot makes sense on paper.
