Philadelphia Eagles: 8 veterans who might not make the 2021 roster
By David Esser
The day for roster cuts to begin is still a ways away, but it’s never too early to begin scoping out a team’s roster when it comes to who may be on the way out. With a full blown “youth movement” taking place with the Philadelphia Eagles this offseason, I’d argue they’re one of the top rosters to keep an eye on when it comes to veterans potentially being shown the door.
Whether it’s due to age, underperformance, or just an overall abundance of depth at the position, here are eight veterans currently on the Philadelphia Eagles roster who might not make it to Week 1.
The Philadelphia Eagles could part ways with a handful of veterans this offseason as they begin looking ahead with their youth.
Genard Avery, LB
Acquired via a deadline-day trade with the Cleveland Browns back in 2019, the decision to bring in Genard Avery never really made any sense.
Not only did Howie Roseman part ways with an early Day 3 pick (fourth round), but Avery’s fit on Jim Schwartz’ defense was nonexistent. A hybrid player who was neither great at defensive end nor outside linebacker, Avery really struggled to find a role on the Eagles over the past two seasons.
It was announced that Avery was making the permanent change to linebacker this past spring, likely in an attempt to salvage his value, but that still might not save his job this offseason. Even with a new, more creative defensive coordinator in Jonathan Gannon now running the show, Avery’s roster status remains murky.
The Eagles depth chart is largely set at DE, and Avery would have to seriously impress in his first year as an OLB to stick around there.
