Philadelphia Eagles: 7 training camp battles to key in on this offseason
By David Esser
The RB Rotation
This battle is somewhat dependent on how many running backs the Philadelphia Eagles ultimately decide to carry onto their 53-man roster, as that affects just how much competition to expect during training camp. If they go with four (the number that I guessed during my personal 53-man roster prediction story), then I’d feel pretty good about Miles Sanders, Boston Scott, Kenneth Gainwell, and Kerryon Johnson making up that room.
However, if they only carry three, then somebody will have to go…
Even if we go with the logic of them carrying four RBs into Week 1 due to the run-first scheme that Nick Sirianni is expected to operate under, there’s still going to be a battle for snaps this offseason. Boston Scott was the team’s go-to third down back the past two seasons, but with Gainwell now in town, one can only assume that Scott’s touches will be decreasing moving forward.
Miles Sanders saw proper RB1 duties this past season, but with an experienced ground-and-pound back like Johnson now on the roster, there’s also a chance that Sanders starts to lose some early-down responsibilities.
Regardless, the running back room should be filled with competition all offseason long. That’s not even to mention guys like Jordan Howard, Adrian Killins, and Elijah Holyfied, who will all be fighting for a roster spot during camp.
