Avonte Maddox, CB

Another former draft pick who’s yet to really pan out for the Philadelphia Eagles, the pressure is on Avonte Maddox to perform during his contract year. He’s set to be an unrestricted free agent after the 2021 season, and as things currently stand, I’m struggling to see a scenario where the Eagles would deem him worthy of a second contract.

For what it’s worth, Maddox is almost definitely locked into a starting job this season. The Eagles cornerback depth is amongst the worst in the NFL, and outside of fourth-round rookie Zech McPhearson, there’s no-one else on the roster who should be expected to push Maddox for starting reps.

However, the Eagles made a rather intriguing trade a few weeks back, picking up former Jags corner Josiah Scott. A player who has an almost identical build to the likes of Maddox from a physical standpoint. If the Eagles don’t like what they see from Maddox this summer, they could easily pivot to McPhearson and Scott as a way to “phase” Maddox out of Jonathan Gannon’s secondary.

It’s still unclear if the Eagles will be using Maddox as a boundary corner or a slot corner (his more natural position) in 2021, but regardless, he’s going to have to show up to camp looking like the multi-year veteran that he is if he wants to continue to get starting reps throughout the season.
