Philadelphia Eagles: Anthony Harris’ ceiling and floor in 2021
Floor: Anthony Harris becomes Andrew Sendejo 2.0.
In 2019, the Philadelphia Eagles signed another former Minnesota Vikings safety by the name of Andrew Sendejo.
Sendejo was also coming off of a bit of a down season versus his previous heights, but Howie Roseman was confident that he could come in and at the very least serve as a third safety in Jim Schwartz’s big nickel defense, a role previously filled by players like Corey Graham during the team’s championship run.
That decision was a mistake.
Was Sendejo downright horrible? No, but he certainly didn’t live up to his preseason hype and was waived midseason to regain a compensatory draft pick. He was eventually replaced by yet another former Viking in Marcus Epps, who was ironically replaced in Minnesota by Sendejo, and outside of one particularly egregious play at the end of the season by the former Wyoming product, the players were more or less interchangeable.
If Harris’ signing becomes an uncontrollable dumpster fire, he too may not make it out of the season.
While signing Harris was about as low-risk as free agency starter signing come, the Eagles do still have K’Von Wallace on their roster, who could eventually hit the field in a more established role. If Wallace can somehow outplay Harris in camp, replace him mid-season due to injury, or simply usurp his spot in the starting lineup due to poor play, there’s a chance the former Clemson Tiger never gives back the spot and remains a piece for the team long-term.
At 29, Harris isn’t exactly old for an NFL safety, but it certainly wouldn’t hurt to find a 23-year-old starter who can remain in the role for the next decade-plus.
Realistically, Anthony Harris’ floor in 2021 is as a low-level starting free safety who bites a bit too often on double moves and struggles to clean up the messes from the Philadelphia Eagles’ motley crew of cornerbacks. But it’s not impossible to imagine the former franchise tag holder imploding into a shell of his former self and turning in the worst season of his professional career in a midnight green uniform. Philly is kind of cursed in that regard when it comes to defensive backs; just ask Nnamdi Asomugha.
What do you think? Will Anthony Harris finally make the Pro Bowl in a midnight green uniform, will he be looking for work midseason, or will his season fall somewhere in-between? Let us know in the comments below.
