Following the conclusion of the 2021 NFL Draft on Saturday, the Philadelphia Eagles were quick at work snatching up undrafted free agents (UDFAs) left and right. While typically, UDFAs are more so brought in as camp bodies or practice squad candidates, the Eagles are in a situation where a handful of these players could actually end up cracking the main roster (due to the roster being bad!).

One of those players who stuck out to me was that of Trevon Grimes, a wide receiver from the University of Florida.

Grimes has experience working with new Eagles quarterbacks coach Brian Johnson, and he put together a very productive senior season at Florida in 2020 (38 catches, 500+ yards, 9 touchdowns).

Here’s what “The Draft Network” had to say in regards to Grimes as a prospect:

After transferring there, he found a home and settled in during his time in Gainesville. Showing positive signs in 2019, he became a more featured player during his final season with the Gators. Grimes is a big-bodied receiver that is best when placed along the boundary. With below-average speed, but long strides, he has the ability to threaten defenders in front of him. A go-up-and-get-it style on vertical patterns, he has the ball skills necessary to haul in tough catches in man coverage situations. A mainstay as a run blocker, he provides extra value during short motions to in-line positions on the backside of runs."

Described as a player who could compete for a WR4 job in the NFL, I actually think Grimes has a fairly decent shot at cracking the Philadelphia Eagles roster should he have a productive training camp. The Eagles are noticeably light at the “X” receiver position, and Grimes projects to be just that at the professional level.

His only main competition currently on the roster would be that of Travis Fulgham and JJ Arcega-Whiteside, both of whom are likely competing for their own respective jobs this summer.

UDFA Trevon Grimes a prime candidate to crack the Philadelphia Eagles roster.

Grimes isn’t the type of UDFA who deserves a wild amount of hype (he went undrafted for a reason), but it’s worth noting that the Eagles didn’t really bring in any external WR competition this offseason outside of Devonta Smith. Obviously Smith and Jalen Reagor have their depth chart spots locked in for the upcoming season, but after that, it’s a bit of a mess.

Greg Ward is average at best, John Hightower and Quez Watkins didn’t really show anything promising during their rookies seasons, and the team’s previously mentioned X receivers aren’t roster locks in the slightest.

As long as Grimes shows up in shape and ready to contribute, I’d definitely keep an eye on him as Week 1 grows closer.
