Philadelphia Eagles: Ranking the team’s top 5 draft day needs
By David Esser
4. Quarterback
The position of need that no-one seemingly wants to admit, the Philadelphia Eagles definitely have a hole to fill at quarterback. Not only just in 2022, but in the years following as well.
For starters, the Eagles are expected to add a third string quarterback at some point during this year’s draft. Someone like Nate Sudfeld who can sit behind Joe Flacco and Jalen Hurts for the upcoming season.
However, it’s also worth highlighting the pure uncertainty that surrounds Hurts at the moment. Both the Eagles front office and coaching staff alike haven’t formally committed to the second-year QB, and I wouldn’t rule out a Day 1 addition to the “quarterback factory” if someone that Roseman really likes (Justin Fields maybe?) falls out of the top six.
3. Offensive Line
Another position group that Eagles fans seem to be against when it comes to the team’s first-round selection, bolstering up the offensive line is something that well-run organizations are always trying to do. Whether it’s Hurts under center moving forward or someone else, there’s no point having a talented young QB if the guys in front of him can’t block.
Outside of the positional value that offensive linemen contain, the Eagles have their fair sure of O-Line holes to take into account moving forward past 2021. Andre Dillard is no sure thing at LT, Brandon Brooks is reportedly still on the trade block, Jason Kelce is likely to retire after this season, and Lane Johnson hasn’t been 100% healthy in quite some time.
The Eagles should strongly consider drafting someone like Rashawn Slater at 12 if he’s there, and should explore picking up 1-2 more developmental linemen on Day 2 and Day 3.
It’s a major position of need once you look past the immediate future of the team.
