Luke Farrell, Ohio State

If the Philadelphia Eagles have no desire to burn a fifth or even a sixth-round pick on a tight end during this year’s draft, targeting someone like Luke Farrell with one of their seventh-round selections would be the next best thing. A low-ceiling/high-floor player who excels as a run blocker, Farrell is the type of longterm project who’s worth keeping on the roster for heavy three tight end sets.

Similar to how the Eagles groomed up Trey Burton behind the likes of Zach Ertz and Brent Celek, Farrell is a guy who likely wouldn’t see a ton of immediate reps within the starting offense, but could develop into a serviceable TE2 or a highly above average TE3 later down the road.

Following back to back seasons of Richard Rodgers and Josh Perkins taking significant reps for the Eagles offense, having a slightly better product at that TE3 spot is an underrated need.

Farrell did catch four total touchdowns playing for Ohio State, but he was almost always used as an extra blocker when on the field, as opposed to a legitimate pass-catching threat.

While the Eagles are in the market for a legitimate pass-catching TE2 moving forward, there’s something to be said about having a reliable third string TE as well, especially someone who can help out when it comes to run blocking/pass protection.

Next. Who could the Philadelphia Eagles be targeting in rumored trade-up?. dark

Farrell should still be around in the seventh, and could even be snagged as an UDFA – a pretty minuscule risk to take in the grand scheme of things.

It’s worth mentioning that the Eagles paid UDFA Noah Togiai quite a bit of money last offseason to be their third string TE, only to have him poached away by the Colts right before the regular season. Farrell reminds me of that type of player – it’d be wise to just get him on a rookie contract.
