Free Agent

It’s too early to start rushing towards the free agent market, but Dave Dombrowski is never one to sit around while there’s holes to be filled. If the future Hall of Fame executive isn’t satisfied with his internal pitching options, and is willing to admit failure in regards to the Moore signing, there are some arms worth kicking the tires on in free agency.

Cole Hamels is the obvious one who fans keep highlighting, but Anibal Sanchez is another name I could see the Phillies checking in on. The team reportedly had interest in the veteran right-hander during the offseason, and Dombrowski of course has a relationship with the tenured veteran.

Brad Peacock, Rick Porcello, Mike Leake, and Jeff Samardzija are some other free agent starters worth highlighting as well.

Bringing in an external arm would require some sort of corresponding roster move, which could mean an end for Moore if things keep trending in the wrong direction. The lefty doesn’t particularly profile as someone who could succeed out of the bullpen.

Like previously stated, Joe Girardi has already communicated that Matt Moore will make his next scheduled start. The veteran southpaw will get at least one more chance to impress as a starting pitcher.

If things go poorly again, don’t be surprised if whispers of a rotation change start popping up.
