Adonis Medina

The 11th ranked prospect in the Phillies farm system, Adonis Medina is another name who could end up getting a shot in the team’s starting rotation. While his minor league numbers have been lackluster the past couple of seasons, the young right-hander flashed some potential during his MLB debut last year.

Called up to make a spot start with the Phillies playoff chances hanging in the balance, Medina showed an unexpected level of poise and command on the mound. He went four innings – allowing two runs while striking out four. The runs that he allowed could also be chalked up to some bad defense, as one or two balls sneaked out of the infield that probably should have been fielded cleanly.

If it wasn’t his first career start in the big leagues, Medina looked like a guy who could’ve gone five or six innings.

While Medina doesn’t have the experience that Velasquez possesses, or the pure skill that Howard does, he’s still a young starting pitcher capable of taking down some innings for the Phils as a true #5. Could he end up being worse than Moore? Sure, Medina is a complete wild card at this stage of his career. But he could also end up giving the team a handful of quality starts, which would be quite the boost for a team that just needs serviceable pitching at the back of their rotation.
