Spencer Howard

The name that fans would collectively prefer to see in the major league rotation, Spencer Howard would provide a significant upgrade over the likes of Matt Moore. Howard is still the Phillies top-rated pitching prospect, and his fastball velocity has been up a tick compared to his debut season.

With that said, the Phillies have remained insistent that they don’t plan on using Howard as a starter this season.

Not only did Spence struggle with his stamina last season, but he’s dealt with some nagging shoulder stiffens/tightness over the last few years. He also hasn’t pitched more than 112.0 innings in a single season down in the minors. Needless to say, Howard hasn’t had the appropriate “ramp up” period to translate into a consistent starter in the major leagues.

While fans are anxious to see Howard involved in the team’s pursuit for a playoff spot this season, the organization’s caution with their top prospect’s health makes sense. They need Howard for the next decade – not just the next three months.

However, there’s still the off-chance that the team pulls the training wheels completely off Howard, and inserts him into the rotation for some four inning, and five inning starts. I’d argue it’s unlikely, but it’s something the team will undoubtedly consider.
