Shane Buechele, Texas/SMU

Last but not least, Shane Buechele provides a very “safe” option for the Philadelphia Eagles should they pass on all of the before mentioned names.

A five-year collegiate athlete who’s thrown over 1,500 passes for Texas and SMU, Buechele has the type of experience to make him a worthwhile pickup late in the draft. Praised for his accuracy, touch, and pocket movement, Buechele has the required traits that’d make him valuable to a blossoming QB room.

What Buechele lacks, however, is what will likely keep him away from ever being considered an NFL starter. His arm strength isn’t great, and his ability to extend plays and operate “off script” is limited – a stark contrast to the likes of Jamie Newman and Feleipe Franks.

The Eagles haven’t always looked for huge upside when it comes to their third quarterback. Nate Sudfeld is a great example of a guy who hung around for quite some time just due to the fact that he was coachable and could make simple reads. Buechele could play a similar role for the Eagles moving forward – not bad value if he ends up being taken in the 6th/7th round.

A third string QB is about the least exciting position in football, but the Eagles undoubtedly need to fill the position at some point this offseason. If they’re unable to land someone serviceable during the draft, the UDFA market could be the next stop in line.
