Philadelphia Eagles: Four *new* RB2 options to consider in 2021
By David Esser
James Conner – Free Agent
If the Philadelphia Eagles are really looking to boost up their running back room this offseason, targeting James Conner on a backloaded multi-year contract could still be in play.
While funds are obviously tight for the Eagles this offseason, they’ve already shown a willingness to hand out multi-year contracts with a majority of the cap hit happening later down the road. They reportedly offered such a contract to JuJu Smith-Schuster prior to him returning to Pittsburgh, which is right on par with the types of moves Howie has made in the past (think Javon Hargrave and how his contract was structured last offseason).
You could honestly make an argument that Conner is a superior running back to that of Sanders, but seeing how his market hasn’t really taken shape this offseason, there’s an honest chance the Eagles could coerce him into taking a RB2 type role behind Sanders in 2021.
Similar to that of Javonte Williams, Conner is a downhill, tough-nosed runner who would compliment Sanders’ style quite appropriately.
While handing out multi-year contracts to running backs in free agency is normally something I would advise against, a Sanders/Conner/Scott trio in 2021 would be quite the arsenal for Sirianni to work with in Year 1 as the Eagles head coach.
