The Philadelphia Eagles select…

Scouting Report. 225. player. 54. Pick Analysis. IDL. Michigan State. Naquan Jones

The Philadelphia Eagles did bring back Hassan Ridgeway on a one-year deal to round out the team’s defensive tackle depth this season, but he’s no surefire thing. The former Colt has constantly battled injuries since arriving to Philly, making him a fairly unreliable option.

With that in mind, doubling up on DT should be in play for Howie Roseman this spring. A 6-4, 323lbs developmental project with above average upper body strength, Naquan Jones would make a serviceable DT4.

54. Scouting Report. QB. 234. SMU. Shane Buechele. player. Pick Analysis

Following the addition of veteran QB Joe Flacco to come in and “compete”, most mocks have the Eagles targeting a late-round arm to take over Nate Sudfeld’s role as QB3.

Shane Buechele is nothing special, but he has the poise and command to keep an offense afloat should he ever be asked to come in and complete a few passes. He operates best in a West Coast scheme, which is relatively in line with what Sirianni is expected to run around Jalen Hurts in 2021.

Pick Analysis. Cole Van Lanen. 240. player. 54. Scouting Report. OT. Wisconsin

I’m sure the Eagles would prefer to land an offensive tackle earlier in the draft, but we’re settling for another project tackle here in the seventh-round.

Cole Van Lanen takes over the role of Prince Tega Wanogho (who was poached away by the Chiefs last season) as a back-of-the-roster developmental tackle. Van Lanen is a physically strong player who’s willing to get involved in the run game, but still has quite a ways to go when it comes to pass protection.

This mock isn’t the flashiest, especially on the offensive side of the ball. However, taking an approach like this is what the Philadelphia Eagles ultimately need to do if their rebuild is to end up a successful one. Bolstering up the defense and the trenches is a tried and tested method to getting an organization back on track in the NFL.
