Tavon Wilson

2020 Team: Indianapolis Colts

While a lot of attention has been placed on Malik Hooker this offseason, I’d actually like to focus in on a different ex-Colt safety, Tavon Wilson.

A nine-year veteran who’s had stints with the New England Patriots and the Detroit Lions, Wilson makes far more sense than Hooker when it comes to what the Philadelphia Eagles specifically need moving forward. Wilson is a tenured vet who can help the team’s young DBs grow in 2021, while simultaneously taking over the starting strong safety gig.

While Wilson’s role with the Colts was minimal in 2020, he logged 98 total tackles the year prior in Detroit. Wilson has never ben spectacular in pass coverage, but his ability to operate in-the-box and be effective in the run game is much needed considering just how poor the Eagles linebacker room still is.

Similar to that of the before mentioned Hooker, the main reason for Wilson to consider Philly is due to his ties with newly hired defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon. There’s a relationship there, one that could help lure the veteran safety to the city of brotherly love.

The Eagles could roll with K’Von Wallace as the unquestioned starter next season, but that’s probably an ill-advised strategy considering just how little the Clemson product played last season. Whether it’s one of the three DBs I mentioned today or someone else, bringing in some veteran depth at the position to replace the void left by Mills’ departure is a pressing issue.
