3 backup tight ends the Philadelphia Eagles should sign in free agency

Trey Burton
2020 Team: Indianapolis Colts
Would it even be a Philadelphia Eagles free agent target list if there wasn’t an abundance of ex-Colts?
In all seriousness, a good chunk of the Eagles new coaching staff is from Indy, and their ability to lure talent based on past relationships will be put to the test this offseason. The Eagles don’t have the appropriate funds to pay players big money this spring – ties to the coaching staff is one of their few selling points.
A Philadelphia legend due to his heroics in Super Bowl 52, Trey Burton‘s career has been up-and-down since departing in 2018. He put up career numbers during his first season with Chicago, but then struggled in 2019. While he wasn’t *great* this past season with Indianapolis, he re-established himself as a serviceable backup.
The former Eagle recorded 28 catches for 250 yards and three touchdowns, despite operating in a fairly limited role.
While there’s probably a good chunk of the fanbase that’s sick and tired of Roseman bringing back former players, Burton genuinely makes sense in this specific situation. The Eagles need a backup tight end for cheap, and Burton already has a relationship with both the head coach and the organization as a whole.
