Philadelphia Eagles 7-round mock draft: Justin Fields falls to sixth overall
By David Esser
The Philadelphia Eagles select…
The one major “con” to going quarterback in the first round as opposed to some other major position of need, is that it left me without a new cornerback through the first three rounds of the draft. While the Philadelphia Eagles still need to add at least one high-upside CB prospect this spring, I’m more so banking on the team bringing in a cheap veteran DB on a one-year deal.
Bryce Thompson is a 5-11 boundary-only cornerback who doesn’t really project to be an NFL starter anytime soon. However, he can play on the outside and the Eagles desperately need depth at that position.
His ball skills were praised at Tennessee, which is the most promising piece to his game when it comes to potentially forcing interceptions and turnovers in a limited role.
A player that I highlighted the other day when looking at some center prospects, grabbing Drake Jackson here in the fifth round may be viewed as a “reach” by some, but it’s worth it due to the need at the position.
2021 will likely be Jason Kelce’s final year playing professional football, and the Eagles need to start developing a successor behind him.
Jackson is actually built quite similarly to Kelce in terms of being undersized, and most projections have him being able to develop into a starting center down the road. The opportunity to sit behind a potential Hall of Famer for a full season would likely do wonders for Jackson’s longterm development.
