Philadelphia Phillies: 3 surprise players who’ve flashed potential this spring
By David Esser
Luke Williams, INF/OF
The one player on this list who I actually think has a promising future with the Phillies organization, Luke Williams is someone who Joe Girardi has spent a lot of time gushing about over the last couple of days.
A third round pick back in 2015, Williams has a career batting average of just .236 in the minor leagues. However, he possesses a ton of defensive versatility to his game. Williams has taken reps at every single defensive position possible (except catcher of course).
While Williams’ Spring Training average at the moment is just as unimpressive as his minor league numbers (currently hitting .200), he’s found a way to make an impact when given the opportunity to do so. He’s recorded one double, one home run, three RBIs, two runs scored, and one walk.
At just 24 years of age, Williams is the type of guy who the Phillies could be viewing as a bit of a longterm investment. While his offensive game still needs some serious work, him being such a Swiss Army knife on the defensive side of things is a majorly valuable trait. Teams are always looking for players who can rotate all over the diamond at any given moment.
Seeing Williams be involved in five games and afforded ten at-bats is definitely a good sign in regards to how Girardi and the rest of the organization views his overall potential.
