Jose Alvarez, LHP

Another bullpen addition that the Philadelphia Phillies could be interested in, bringing back Jose Alvarez would be a very “low-risk/high-reward” type signing to make. The lefty was one of Philly’s only reliable relief options last year prior to his groin injury, and could likely be had on a minor-league deal.

Similar to the likes of Brandon Kintzler, Tony Watson, and Hector Rondon, giving Alvarez the opportunity to come in and win back his job during camp could pay off down the road.

While Alvarez has struggled to keep his WHIP down since arriving to Philadelphia (1.439 over 65.1 innings), he’s always had a knack for not actually allowing a ton of runs. His 3.14 ERA as a Phillie is better than most of the relievers currently in the team’s bullpen.

Bringing him in for a “tryout” of sorts alongside all the other veteran minor-leaguers almost makes too much sense at this point in time.

Ultimately speaking, it’s unlikely that the Phillies are planning on being all that active over the next couple of weeks. Managers tend to like having their roster set prior to Spring Training kicking off, and like previously stated, the team’s payroll is pressed right up against the luxury tax.

However, with so much talent still available to be signed at the moment, it’s at least worth noting that the Phillies could seriously upgrade their roster if they really wanted to.
